About me
Ms CarmackHello! My name is Elyse Carmack, and welcome to Easy as Pi Learning! I am now in my 7th year of teaching, and it has been an incredible journey. Over the years, I’ve taught 7th and 8th-grade mathematics, as well as high school courses including Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Statistics, and Quantitative Reasoning.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a Middle School Mathematics concentration in 2018. While I grew up enjoying math, my true love for the subject blossomed when I became part of a dynamic math community. That sense of collaboration and discovery continues to drive me, and I strive to make math not just approachable but exciting for my students.
Math can be challenging—there’s no doubt about it—but that’s also what makes it so rewarding. I want to support and collaborate with other educators who are just as passionate about making education meaningful for students. Together, we can show that learning math can be, dare I say, “Easy as Pi.”

What’s the Activity?
In our "All About Me" exploration, students will create their own personal tags using different math concepts. Each tag is a chance to reflect on who they are and what makes them special. It’s not just about numbers—it’s about understanding and sharing what’s inside each of us in a fun and creative way!

Each student will design a series of personalized tags that combine their love for math with self-expression. These tags cover a variety of aspects from their names to their favorite activities, strengths, and much more. Here’s a sneak peek at what each tag will represent:

How well do your students work together? Discussion is one of the most important things we, as teachers, try to create in our classroom. Why does it have to be so challenging to get them to talk?
Well, it doesn’t have to be anymore.

Students naturally gravitate to a role they like when working in groups. Let’s celebrate those strengths each student has. Have them take the personality test to see what type of group partner they are.
After answering seven questions and coloring, they will know if they are a director, a planner, a creative, or an includer. Have them reflect with their groups and learn more about themselves.

On the first day of school, I love to give a quiz!
I know what you are thinking; WHAT? A quiz?
I tell them to clear their desks of everything but a pencil, and we have a quiz! I make sure students know this quiz is critical.
The student’s eyes widened. “ON THE FIRST DAY?!” “Is this a grade?”
I respond, “Yes! I hope you are ready!”
Finally, they all begin to look at the paper and see ALL the questions were about me!
They all start to laugh. This quiz becomes a fun way to get to know their teacher and learn a little about me.
After, I say it is only fair if they give me a quiz on the most important facts about them. Each student writes a few multiple-choice questions for me.
They always love telling me that the teacher got a 0/10 on their quiz! I will say, it makes my day when I get a random 10/10 and they are SO surprised! (Just like I am.) I know it sounds like a lot on the first day to take 120 quizzes, but they LOVE grading you the next day and sharing the facts about themselves. It’s worth the 30 minutes it takes to read the questions.

Creating class norms can be challenging, but this activity takes discovery math to a new level!
In this activity, students need to discover patterns on their own! This game takes the pressure off the instructor and more on the students.
I always tell students, “I am the undefeated champ of this game. I am going to win EVERY TIME!” As you can imagine, this makes the student’s competitive side come out. Can you “beat” the champ?
Let students play in teams of two to discover that this game is luck or skill.
Students discover that the teacher knows things, but it is much more rewarding when they learn them on their own.

What is the first feeling you get when you think of “math”? Some of you may cringe from a bad experience, some may smile from a beautiful experience, and some may sit there because it was never anything special for them. That is OKAY! Let us know how you REALLY feel!

Once we air our experiences, we tell our class that we want to see if their feelings towards math change or stay the same by the last day of school.

Each season I reflect on Math Goals with my students.
In the Fall, students will create a "Math SMART Goal."
In Wintertime, students will reflect on their fall goal and create a winter goal
Students will see how their goal progresses in Springtime and edit or keep it.
In the summertime, students will look at their goals throughout the year and edit or keep the goal.
Students will go through the process of creating a SMART goal. They can change or keep their goals.
I enjoy keeping each season's picture and having the students look back at the end of the year with all four pictures.

Let’s bring in real-life examples with Pythagorean Theorem by having students create their town! Students will have to think about what is important to them when creating a town and what they want in the center of their area.
Students will reflect, create, explore the Pythagorean theorem, and design a blueprint to discover Pythagorean Theorem fully.

Students will color in a picture of the three women and research each mathematician separately. This can create a beautiful board to showcase these women's accomplishments.

Are your students ALWAYS on their phones? Then this is the PERFECT escape for you and them.
Students start the lesson with a cellphone quiz to see how much they are attached to their phones (or electronics)

What’s your sign? This is one of the first things my students asked me during the first week of school. This activity is for you if your students want to show off their amazing signs. With twelve different pictures, you can do just that. While learning about every student’s birthday, you can also have them practice their graphing. Two in one, if I do say so myself! I never miss a student’s birthday now!

After every trimester, I bring up goals with my students. If you need your students to reflect on how to have the most productive math class, have them create math SMART Goals.
Students use the information they get from what a mathematician is and create a goal for the year.
A perfect activity to use for parent-teacher conferences or decorate your room.
-Students will answer questions and create a SMART goal for math class.
-Student write their goal in the circle of the picture and color the rest. (If you want to save time, you can opt for students to write their goals in an already colored picture. The lesson will be cut in half.)

Group activities are hard to find, but not anymore.
I group my students into five groups of eight and tell them to color their pages as neatly as possible. (Each group has a row of the picture.)
Next, I tell the eight students to create a puzzle and make a picture. After about 5 minutes, they are confused because it is not making a “picture,” but just a line. I tell them to think deeper. The students come together as a class to create a 32-piece picture. This picture can be posted as a bulletin board after. Just like a quilt, the students create a unique piece to the image.

I have students focus on goals during the first weeks of school.
By creating a growth garden, students will have the chance to express their goals for the upcoming year and create a bulletin board that shows how amazing they will be this year for the whole school.

For Black History Month, let’s explore famous black mathematicians.
Students will find a new role model every day as they research a black mathematician that made amazing contributions to math or STEM.
For 26 days, have your students research for a warm-up to educate themselves on some of the amazing accomplishments these people have done for math. Students will explore different math fields and new people they may not know yet.
Do your students love football? John Urschel was a player on the Ravens football team, but also loves math!
